An Edmonton Oiler great achieved a milestone tonight that almost guarantees his status as an all-time great point producer. He couldn’t quite beat Mike Bossy, who achieved the feat in 656 games but Connor McDavid did it in game number 659 to incredibly become the fourth fastest to reach 1000 NHL career regular season points. Fittingly on a two-on-one rush with fellow superstar Leon Draisaitl, McDavid finished the play off with authority. McDavid’s sixth of the year made it 1-1 versus the Nashville Predators, and more importantly marked point number 1000 for him in his career.
Connor McDavid is 4th Fastest to Score 1000 Career NHL Regular Season Points
He came into Thursday night’s contest against the Nashville Predators sitting at 999. This was after another heroic, four-point effort Tuesday against the New York Islanders. In that game, McDavid was in on all the team’s four goals, including an assist on Leon Draisaitl‘s overtime winner.
In reaching the milestone, McDavid becomes the 99th NHL player all time to reach 1000 points. Considering all the great players who played the game, the exclusivity of that club is remarkable in itself. The fact that he’s done it so quickly will put him down amongst the all-time greats to ever lace up a pair of skates. He truly is the definition of a generational player.
Connor McDavid’s Stats Highlighting Its Significance
In addition, for McDavid and the fans witnessing his current goal-scoring, we are all experiencing scoring proficiency at its pinnacle of the sport. The last two seasons he had at least 173 points combined over regular season and playoffs. The only other player to have that many points in consecutive seasons was when Wayne Gretzky did it nine times in a row from 1980-81 to 1988-89. The 173 mark has only ever been achieved 16 times. Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux did it as well.
As the Stanley Cup Finals Begin, Edmonton Oiler Players Chasing History
So after McDavid collected his 1000 points this evening in Nashville, take notice. Take a second to reflect on what an incredible feat this was. Also, think about what other great records McDavid, or anyone such as Alex Ovechkin, have left to achieve over the next little while.
