He’ll continue through the playoffs.
The Bruins announced this evening that Jack Edwards, the team’s longtime play-by-play man for NESN, will retire from broadcasting at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 season.
“I grew up a Bruins fan, and who had more fun than us over the last two decades?” said Edwards in a news release. “In collaboration with Bruins and NESN leadership, I recently decided that the time has come for me to finish my shift as the voice of the Boston Bruins. I am no longer able to attain the standards I set for myself, to honor the fans, the players, the Bruins organization and NESN with the best they all deserve.”
Edwards will call tonight’s regular season finale and the first round of the playoffs, after which point the broadcasts usually leave the regional networks (though that’s not always the case).
Edwards has been with NESN since 2005, part of a 45-year broadcasting career that also included stints with ESPN, WCVB, ABC, and WHDH.
He has been the Bruins’ sole play-by-play man since 2007, along with co-pilot Andy Brickley.
Edwards was a polarizing figure, even among Bruins fans. Some rolled their eyes at his over-the-top approach and turns of phrase (tumbling muffin, a coin that wouldn’t be tossed), while others appreciated his unabashed passion for all things black and gold.
Fans of other NHL teams often complained about Edwards, which endeared him to some Bruins fans even more.
Edwards recently opened up to the Boston Globe about some of his on-air struggles over the past couple of seasons, including some slurred speech and trouble enunciating certain words.
Those challenges mean this announcement isn’t exactly surprising, but it’s the end of an era regardless.
Edwards’ time as the Bruins’ play-by-play announcer coincided with the franchise’s resurgence and golden years.
For many younger Bruins fans, he’s the only play-by-play announcer they’ve known.
“I retire from broadcasting not with a heavy heart, but gratefulness for a 19-year-long joyride,” Edwards said. “I owe my career, my own pursuit of happiness, to the love and support of my family. I thank every member of the Bruins and NESN for your loyalty, helping me to achieve and live out a lifetime goal, high above the ice.”
The Bruins said that NESN will conduct a nationwide search for a new play-by-play announcer to work alongside Brickley next season.

For my money, the “ya better pay him in rubles” remains my favorite Edward-ism.
Happy trails, Jack!
