Roster cuts, press conferences, etc.
Welcome to the last full week of the off-season, folks!
Technically it’s not really the off-season because preseason is well under way, but with Opening Night a week from tomorrow, we are just about ready to start the real stuff.
The Bruins dropped their latest preseason game over the weekend, a 3-2 overtime loss to the Flyers in Philly.
After that game ended, the B’s made their first real round of cuts on Sunday, the vast majority of which fell into the “not surprising, good luck at the next level” category.
I don’t mean this as a knock on anyone’s opinion, but I was a bit surprised at some of the reactions to Fabian Lysell being cut.
While I probably would have given him a few more games of camp (what’s the risk in doing so, really?), I didn’t think he had set the world alight during camp to such a degree that he was a must-keep player.
By most accounts, Lysell’s work ethic and approach have grown every season since he turned pro, so it’s not like this latest cut should be the straw that breaks the Swedish camel’s back.
Ideally, he continues to develop in Providence and is ready when called upon.
In a fortuitous bit of timing, the press will have plenty of chances to question the B’s on that move and, oh, I don’t know, the lack of a number-one goalie today — the team’s official “start-of-season” press conference is Monday morning.
Don Sweeney, Jim Montgomery, Cam Neely, and Charlie Jacobs will all be available to the media at TD Garden, starting at 11 AM.
I wonder what they’ll discuss?
You can pre-write Neely talking about how the team got heavier and harder to play against, Sweeney saying he won’t discuss the details of the Swayman negotiations, and Jacobs saying that he expects this team to compete for a Stanley Cup.
Other than that, the B’s are back in preseason action tomorrow.
What’s on tap for today?
