A true trouncing.
If tonight’s road trip-opening game in Winnipeg was considered a good test for the streaking Bruins, they’re heading on to Seattle with a shiny, red “F” on their report card.
The B’s got pasted by the Jets, losing 8-1 in a game that saw a (relatively) close 3-1 contest turned into a blowout by a five-goal Winnipeg third period.
Joe Sacco let Jeremy Swayman go the distance in this one, with Swayman allowing a career-high eight goals in the loss.
Mark Scheifele (2G-1A) and Kyle Connor (1G-2A) led the way for the Jets, who also got 23 saves from Connor Hellbuyck.
While you might not think there were many timely saves in a seven-goal win, Hellebuyck did make some important stops while the game was still close.
The highlights, if you really like hearing Winnipeg’s goal horn:
Game notes
- If you’re looking for something to put in the “good news” column, the Bruins did get a power play goal from David Pastrnak, who finally scored on one of his traditional one-timers from the face-off circle. Maybe getting one of those against the league’s best goalie will help get him going.
- On the opposite side of things, the Bruins’ penalty kill didn’t do them any favors tonight, with the Jets going 3-for-6 on the man advantage.
- Swayman ended the night with a .771 save percentage, which is…not great. His uninspiring start to the season continues, which won’t do much to quiet the clamor around his contract situation. Per Dale Arnold on NESN postgame, tonight was the first time a Bruins goalie allowed eight goals in a game since Dan Vladar in 2021.
- As you might expect in an 8-1 game, things devolved a bit down the stretch, including a shouting match of sorts between the benches.
Overall, it was an ugly night. While you can certainly say that the Bruins gave the Jets several of their goals, it’s hard to put too much positive spin on an 8-1 game.
The Bruins will make a brief return to the United States for a 10 PM game in Seattle on Thursday before heading north once more for the western Canada swing this weekend.
