David Pastrnak now has three goals in three games.
The Boston Bruins edged out the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1, on David Pastrnak’s overtime goal on Saturday afternoon at the TD Garden.
The thrilling sequence was powered by the Bruins’ youth, with Matt Poitras and Mason Lohrei equally contributing to the winning play.
Here are the game’s highlights!
First period:
Scoreless
Second period:
After some big saves on the penalty kill by Jeremy Swayman, with a few seconds left on the kill, a loose puck found Trevor Moore at the back door with no one covering him at 5:22 of the second period. 1-0 Kings.
A Bruins’ power play was short-lived as Pavel Zacha got called for tripping to make it 4-on-4 hockey. But with some extra space, Brad Marchand threw a wrist shot at Darcy Kuemper’s pads which left a huge rebound for Elias Lindholm to fire a one-timer past Kuemper glove side at 16:50 of the second period. 1-1 game.
Third period:
No goals
Overtime:
Matt Poitras backhanded a pass to David Pastrnak who left a pass for Mason Lohrei entering the zone. Lohrei then gave a pass right back to Pastrnak in the slot for a wrist shot low past Kuemper at 3:07 into overtime. Final score: 2-1 Bruins.
Game notes
- If there is one take away from today’s win, it’s the young guys are going to be all right and can make an impact. Matt Poitras played his first regular season game since Jan. 25 and looked his best, according to Jim Montgomery — and we agree. Along with that, Mason Lohrei bounced back after being a healthy scratch and made that perfect pass to Pastrnak out front for the win.
- Jim Montgomery said he was impressed with Lohrei’s game, and that Poitras’ return — and what he did in it — was “special.”
- Pastrnak may have netted the OT winner, but the goal was really a product of perfect execution of all three players on the ice. The seamless passing between Lohrei, Poitras and Pastrnak made the goal look effortless.
- With the goal, Pastrnak has three goals in three games. Let’s go 82 for 82?
- While a win is a win, the Bruins are still looking for their first complete 60-minute game. The offense has been there the past two games, netting 10 goals in the first two games, but today they had a harder time transitioning to that aspect of their game.
- The lack of production started in the first period with failed power plays and low shots on net through the second period. “The bottom six carried us and gave us an opportunity to stay in the game and get to overtime,” Montgomery said.
- Elias Lindholm’s tying goal also gave the Bruins some life for his team leading 5th point so far for a three-game point streak. What was more impressive though was Marchand’s pass off Kuemper’s pads which created a long rebound almost perfectly out to Lindholm.
- The Bruins struggled on the power play this afternoon, going 0 for 5. They couldn’t sustain o-zone time and at times, it looked like the Kings were the one on the power play. Overall in the game though, no one was able to capitalize on the man advantage either as the Kings also went 0 for 5. SCOC asked Brad Marchand how concerned he was about the power play and if it’s just about needing time to build chemistry.
Marchand said: “We had a really good game last game on the power play. We don’t really look at the fact that we were zero for five we look at we could have had three or four goals. Tonight, we weren’t great. They (Kings) have a very, very aggressive penalty kill. We didn’t do a great job managing it at the right time. So I thought we would be a little better there. But I thought we were really good last game.”
- SCOC asked him as well about Elias Lindholm on the PK and his chemistry with him shorthanded and on 4-on-4.
Marchand said: “I don’t know how much penalty kill I’ll be playing this year, but we did a good job today. So hopefully when we get out there together, we’ll continue to find that chemistry.”
- Swayman made 33 saves in the win for a .971 save percentage…that’s more like it!
- The Bruins return to the TD Garden ice on Monday, Oct. 14 for another 1 p.m. start and already their second game of the season against the Florida Panthers.
