That BOS/COL deal
To COL: Charlie Coyle, 5th 2026
To BOS: Casey Mittelstadt, Will Zellers, 2nd 2025— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) March 7, 2025
Charlie Coyle has had a TOUGH season in Boston at 15-7-22 in 64 games with a -14 plus/minus, but the Mayor of Weymouth was a local and a favorite in Beantown and a part of one of the shrewdest trades of Don Sweeney’s tenure when he came from the Minnesota Wild in 2019 on their way to the Finals.
Casey Middlestadt certainly needs a bounceback but offers a lot of playmaking ability as a middle-six forward. 11-23-34 in 63 games, but he’s also 7 years younger than Coyle, so an interesting injection of youth into the forward corps.
Will Zellers was a third-round pick in the 2024 draft by the Avalanche, and profiles like more than a few of the forwards Sweeney has traded for in the previous days. Smaller profile—5-11 and 170 lbs but he’s still just 18—and an immense goalscorer, 37 in 40 gamed for the Green Bay Gamblers. He’s headed to the University of North Dakota in the fall, a top-tier NCAA program. Another Gamblers alum on the Bruins? Mason Lohrei!
How do you grade this trade?
