The Ex-Lightning/Blackhawk Johnson was brought in on a PTO during the Pre-season and has been training/skating with the team since then, though the team did not see reason to sign him before the season began.
As the Bruins’ infuriating offensive woes have continued on (this last weekend excepted), calls for the team to sign Johnson began to cry out from the fanbase, as they were enamored with his strong pre-season performance and effort, and figured it will translate into the current season as the Bruins try to clamor back into being an above .500 team.
Personally? As good as his pre-season was, I am still under the impression that he is still a reclamation project. Johnson has largely been buoyed by playing with hotter, younger talents for some time now as well as playing on the Extremely Bad Chicago Blackhawks. Sure, we can maybe forgive him for that…were it not for this sharp downturn in on-ice effectiveness coming during his time in Tampa Bay and refusing to abate since.
That said, If he can bring that effort from the pre-season into the regular season while also not being a major damper on an already pretty depleted offensive attack, then I will be satisfied. It’s a zero-risk signing that carries no weight into the future, and gives a guy a chance to re-establish himself as an NHLer. Everybody wins!
So with that in mind, let’s all welcome Tyler Johnson (officially) to the Black and Gold!
