Boston had a sluggish return to the ice after the holiday break.
It seems like the Fleet took pride in the fact that they had the best penalty kill win the league and came with the strategy that was the best way too prevent goals as they took three consecutive penalties in the opening period. The third skater advantage for Toronto led to the opening goal, and a lead they would never surrender.
Early in the second Daryl Watts would do her thing from behind the net and set up Jessica Kondas for her first career goal, on her first career shot, in her first career game. A late Toronto penalty would allow Boston to get a rare power play goal of their own, when Loren Gabel was able to put a puck behind Raygan Kirk.
The third period unfortunately did not see Boston come out with urgency despite trailing. Toronto seemed to carry play mot of the way. The Sceptres were able to add the insurance goal when they caused a turnover at the Boston blue line and brought the puck down for an Emma Woods goal. Coach Kessel made a call to goo empty net very early, but unfortunately Boston was unable to control the puck and Toronto added an empty net goal. A late Watts roughing penalty led to Boston putting the puck in the net, which was promptly waived off for goalie interference. Kessel would challenge the call on the ice and it was overturned to bring Boston back to a two goal deficit, which was too little too late.
