The Boston Celtics had a pretty quiet trade deadline, though that was to be expected. Beyond trading Jaden Springer to the Houston Rockets, the Celtics did not make another trade. Regardless, they are still in the market to bolster their roster for the second half of the season, which is exactly what they did. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Celtics and free agent Torrey Craig agreed to a deal to bring him to Boston.

Craig spent the first part of the season with the Chicago Bulls. However, due to injuries, he only appeared in nine games. On the year, he is averaging 6.9 points and 2.8 rebounds. Furthermore, he is shooting 48.9% from the field and 42.9% from the three-point line.
The Bulls waived Craig after their three-team trade that sent Zach LaVine to the Sacramento Kings.
Boston Celtics Sign Torrey Craig After Trade Deadline
Torrey Craig Was a Trade Candidate Before Joining the Boston Celtics
Before the Bulls moved on from him, teams were interested in Craig. Most notably, the Milwaukee Bucks reportedly considered a reunion with the 3-and-D forward. With the 34-year-old being out of action since late December, trading him would have been difficult. Regardless, he offers a lot on the court and should be a good pickup for Boston.
Craig is a fantastic defender who provides some bench scoring as well. The Celtics are the reigning champions and are in a good spot to repeat this season. Acquiring Craig gives them a boost on both sides of the ball. Additionally, he provides extra depth at the wing spot, something the team has lacked since Oshae Brissett departed.
It is unclear how big of a role he will play in Boston, but there is a lot to like about his arrival.
The Last Word
After this move, the Celtics now have just one roster spot open. There is no indication of what they might do with it. However, they have a few options.
The Celtics can bring in another bench piece to bolster their roster as they prepare for another title run. On the other hand, they can promote from within by converting a two-way contract into a standard deal. The most likely candidate for this is Drew Peterson, who showed out in a few games for Boston this season. Lastly, the Celtics can also choose to keep the spot open for financial reasons, which is another likely option.
Regardless of what happens, the Celtics are primed for another deep run. There is some legitimate competition ahead of them. But as it stands, there is no reason to believe the Celtics cannot be the first team since the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors to repeat as champions.
