Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla got his team’s title defense started off strong with a blowout win over the New York Knicks. But Mazzulla had an interesting admission about his plans for his championship ring.
Speaking to the media after the game, Mazzulla said that he has no plans to wear the ring he received for leading the Celtics to their 18th NBA title. He joked that the ring is just too big and remarked that he likes the championship banner more.
“When I got the ring (I thought) ‘I don’t know, it’s too big and I’m never going to wear it. But it’s cool to have.’ That’s what I thought,” Mazzulla said, via Justin Turpin of WEEI. “I was more fascinated by the banner because I come in here every afternoon and take a look at those. They represent so much. So the banner was the highlight for me because it represents a lot of things that go into it and the rafter have a life of their own. So that moment (of unfurling) was the coolest.”
The Celtics went 64-18 under Mazzulla last year and went 16-3 in the postseason, including a 4-0 sweep of the rival Knicks, knocking off the Dallas Mavericks to win their first NBA title in over a decade.
And after thrashing the Knicks to open up their 2024-25 account, it looks like the Celtics are well on their way to contending for another one.
Maybe if the Celtics win their 19th title this year they’ll resize the rings into one that Mazzulla is willing to wear…
