Guards aren’t supposed to be able to block shots like that.
Here’s a stat for you. If you’re a Celtics fan, it likely won’t surprise you at all, but it’s noteworthy nonetheless.
Only one NBA player is averaging at least 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block per game while shooting at least 40 percent from 3-point range as of Tuesday afternoon.
Only 34 players are averaging one block or more. Out of those 34, only seven are shooting 40 percent or better from 3. Of those seven, only two are averaging 4 assists or more (OK, Draymond Green is the other; sorry for the buzzkill). Of those two, only one is averaging 18 or more points (in Draymond’s dreams).

His name, as you may have guessed by now, is Derrick White.
White, who has deservedly become a fan favorite around these parts, has a knack for giving the Celtics exactly what they need at the perfect moments. I’m not calling him Dwyane Wade, but he has a Wade-like pulse for how to contribute in critical spots (and White is objectively a better shooter).
It may be a block, it may be a 3, it may be an assist. Whatever the Celtics need, White is there to provide it. I would argue that he’s one of the most versatile players in the NBA.
Obviously, guys like LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic headline that list. But in the second tier, few are more impactful in a variety of ways than White.
Derrick White needs to be a Celtic for life.

When teams key in on Tatum and Jaylen Brown, White is consistently there to make the simple yet effective play.
Let’s break it down skill by skill. The shot-blocking is legitimately wild and separates him from 99 percent of guards in the league. His timing is impeccable. Offensive players still seem to have no idea it’s coming, which amuses me. Averaging a block a game as a center is difficult. Doing so as a guard is insane.
His 3-point shooting is extremely reliable. I’ve got to give credit to guys like Anthony Davis and Myles Turner, who consistently step out and bury 3’s. But White has the seventh-most made 3’s per game at 3.9, behind only Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Bell, Tyler Herro, some guy named Stephen Curry, Tatum and legend Norm Powell.

Extremely useful shot for any guard to have, and White has mastered it. pic.twitter.com/3bIhLnNdxl

Out of those seven players, White has by far the fewest turnovers. The ball is in his hands less than the majority of those players, but it speaks to his poise and playmaking ability. White can play the 1 or the 2 (even the 3 as needed), defends bigs at a high level when asked to and makes life much easier for his teammates.
Try to think of a skill that White isn’t good at. You can’t. There isn’t one. The limit does not exist.
NBC Sports Boston broadcaster Drew Carter put it well Monday night when he said that White was born to play for the Celtics. Red Auerbach and Tommy Heinsohn would have loved this guy. He really is the perfect Celtic, and he also happens to be one of the league’s most versatile players.
Don’t take him for granted, because Swiss Army knives like this don’t come around very often.
