Nothing is official yet, but there’s a chance the Boston Celtics will have to play the rest of the NBA Finals without Kristaps Porzingis.
Porzingis left Game 2 against the Dallas Mavericks early due to an injury. On Tuesday, the Celtics provided an update on the talented center’s leg.
“Celtics Center Kristaps Porzingis suffered a torn medial retinaculum allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg at 3:27 of the third quarter of Game 2,” the team said. “The injury is unrelated to Porzingis’ prior right calf injury.”
Evan Jeffries, a doctor of physical therapy, had a concerning reaction to Boston’s update on Porzingis.
As of right now, Jeffries is concerned about Porzingis’ status for the remainder of the NBA Finals.
“The posterior tibialis tendon does not dislocate so need some wording clarification here,” Jeffries wrote. “But essentially the medial retinaculum will support the patella when torn it can affect stability of the knee Question is did posterior tibialis tendon tear? Regardless no way he is playing the rest of the series.”
Well, that’s not what you want to hear if you’re a Celtics fan.
Porzingis had a stellar Game 1 performance for Boston, dropping 20 points in only 21 minutes of action. He followed that up with 12 points in Game 2.
If Porzingis is unable to suit up for Game 3, the Celtics will need to lean heavily on Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Jayson Tatum and Derrick White.
