When the Boston Celtics play the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals, history will be made on a number of levels. Neither of the two teams’ primary stars has won a title, and if Boston wins, it will be for a league-record 18th banner. But there’s more history embedded in this series, and not just with the players. It will see a Hall of Fame broadcaster and a scholar of the league in Doris Burke and JJ Redick, respectively, on the call. It will be the first time a woman has called a major North American sport title series in a men’s league, as well.
The Celtics Wire had the pleasure of catching up with both just days ahead of Game 1 of the series, and the duo met with the press this week to talk about the looming title round, working together, and a number of other topics.
But in light of comments made by Stan Van Gundy regarding the historically good backcourt of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, we had to ask both Burke and Redick their thoughts on whether they agree with Van Gundy’s bold claim that the duo is “arguably the best offensive backcourt in the history of the NBA” — and how they stack up against Boston’s backcourt of Derrick White and Jrue Holiday.
