The Boston Celtics made a statement in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, defeating the Dallas Mavericks by 18 points.
On Thursday night, Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson offered his thoughts on the Celtics’ win over the Mavericks.
Johnson believes the return of Kristaps Porzingis was the key for the Celtics. The talented big man had 20 points off the bench for Joe Mazzulla’s squad.
“Kristaps Porzingis was the key to the Celtics win tonight,” Johnson wrote on X. “He ignited their offense, scoring 10 points off the bench in the first quarter, and finishing out the game with 20. Five other Celtics followed his lead – Brown (22 points), Tatum (16 points), White (15 points), Holiday (12 points) and Horford (10 points).”
We’d have to agree with Magic on this one.
Porzingis was sidelined for over a month due to a calf injury, missing the final two rounds of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
When asked about his performance in Game 1, Porzingis said it was a reminder to the world that he’s an impact player.
“Tonight was affirmation to myself that I’m pretty good,” Porzingis said, via ESPN. “I’m not perfect but I can play like this and I can add to this team.”
Game 2 of the NBA Finals is set for this Sunday. Tipoff will be at 8 p.m. ET.
