A handful of thoughts and notes on today’s Sixers injury report before their matchup against the Golden State Warriors, including an interesting Joel Embiid thing that could be something and could be nothing and a good sign on Paul George’s back:

One of my more lengthy instant observations stories of the season, with a ton to unpack from the Sixers’ loss in Sacramento.
A lot to like — especially Paul George — until the fourth quarter, when there was much to dislike — especially Paul George.

Sixers lead 89-80 heading into the 4th, and have been led on both ends of the court by Paul George, who is now up to 30 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists, while making a number of great defensive plays in the closing minutes of the 3rd quarter.
He’s 3 points off his season high. – 11:52 PM

Paul George with excellent hands to force a turnover rather than what would have likely been a Kings bucket, and it gets the Sixers out in transition, leading to a Maxey layup. Pretty significant swing. – 11:46 PM

Back-to-back baskets at the rim for Paul George, who is up to 27 points. Absolutely brilliant stuff from him so far tonight. Just picked up his third foul, he’ll need to be a bit careful but will likely check out in a minute or two regardless. – 11:39 PM

Turns out Paul George needed what most stars need to get going, just some early touches and rhythm.
Nick Nurse has to figure out how to overlay that with Embiid and Maxey. – 10:50 PM

19 points is the most Paul George has scored in the last 6 games.
He’s got 18 here early in the 2nd quarter.
Another instance of the Kings being the Tylenol of the NBA. – 10:45 PM

Tim Bontemps: The argument of “it’s better to get something than nothing” no longer applies in today’s NBA. As we wrote last month, Miami does not want to be stuck with money it can’t move on its books in a Butler trade. The flexibility the LA Clippers created in letting Paul George walk this summer marks a viable path for the Heat — presuming no one meets their asking price for Butler’s services. -via ESPN / January 3, 2025

“We already had a hard time with one game; how are we going to have three All-Star Games? We had a hard enough time trying to get everyone to compete at a high level playing in one game,” George said. “So I just don’t understand how; I guess it’s a shorter number to play to, so I guess that’s the competitive part about it. It’s competing to get to, I think it’s 40 or something like that. “But yeah, I just don’t like the format; if we’re not going to go out and compete and be competitive, then I think it’s still just wasting time,” George concluded. -via Clutch Points / December 30, 2024
Wembanyama became the third player in NBA history after Wilt Chamberlain (1959 and 1961) and Nikola Jokic (2022) to score 40-plus points with 15-plus rebounds in a Christmas game. His 42-point performance ranks third in NBA history for a player making his Christmas Day debut behind Chamberlain (45) and Tracy McGrady (43). “Good Lord, man,” Knicks guard Josh Hart said of Wembanyama. “He’s different. The league will be in good hands when all the old guys and elder statesmen like LeBron [James] and [Kevin Durant] are out of the [sport]. His release point is so high, and his ability to hit shots, it opens up everything for them.” -via ESPN / December 26, 2024
