We’ve reached the dog days of college sports summer, and with it comes our first batch of that sweet offseason content you all know and love. It’s time for the 2023-2024 BC Interruption Awards! First to get recognized this season is your Female Rookie of the Year, which goes to Sammy Taber of BC Women’s Hockey.
It was an up and down season for the Boston College Women’s Hockey team, but one of the year-long bright spots was freshman Sammy Taber. A local prospect out of Tewksbury, MA and Cushing Academy, Taber came in with pretty high expectations as one of a few very highly regarded recruits in last season’s women’s hockey freshman class.
Taber took a little bit of runway to get up to the speed of the college game — she was a quiet 0-1—0 line in her first 8 games of the season — but once she settled in, it was quite a lift off. Over her final 27 games, she put up 13 goals and 18 more assists for a 13-19—32 total on the year, leading the team in most major stats including goals, assists, points (obviously), and +/-.
Time and time again, Taber put the team on her back and scored some of the most crucial goals of the season, including the overtime winner against Providence to advance the Eagles to the Hockey East semifinals:

As if you needed any more evidence for her case to be BCI Female Rookie of the Year — she was in fact Hockey East’s league-wide female rookie of the year as well… enough said.
