After being let go from the New England Patriots, Bill O’Brien didn’t even need to buy a new house to move to his new job as the head coach at Boston College. He’s now trying to build an NFL-caliber staff by adding a former head coach to his program.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Boston College are hiring former NFL head coach Doug Marrone as a senior analyst. Marrone was recently dismissed as the offensive line coach of the New Orleans Saints after two seasons.
“Sources: Boston College is hiring former NFL head coach Doug Marrone as the program’s new Senior Analyst for Football Strategy/Research. He’s the former head coach of the Bills and Jaguars and also at Syracuse. His most recent jobs were at the Saints and Bama as the OL coach,” Thamel wrote.
Marrone rose to prominence as head coach at Syracuse from 2009 to 2012, going 25-25 but finishing his run with a Big East title and Pinstripe Bowl win his final year with the team. He parlayed that job into a two-year stint as head coach of the Buffalo Bills, where he went 15-17 over two seasons.
Marrone found slightly more success with the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking over in 2016 and leading the team to a 10-6 record and the AFC Championship Game in 2017. But Marrone’s Jaguars tumbled to three-straight losing seasons from 2018 to 2020
After being fired by the Jaguars, he spent the 2021 season as offensive line coach for the Alabama Crimson Tide under Nick Saban before returning to the NFL in 2021.
Will Marrone parlay this job into another head coaching job somewhere?
