On Sunday evening, the Boston College men’s basketball team took on the Old Dominion Monarchs down in the Cayman Islands for the annual Cayman Islands Classic. BC came into the game pretty heavily favored and they showed why as the game progressed, eventually coming out of it with a 82-52 victory.
The scoring got going early for BC and didn’t let up for most of the night. Chas Kelley, Fred Payne, and Joshua Beadle led the way for the Eagles with a flurry of three-pointers in the first few minutes, something that ODU’s slow defenders couldn’t really deal with. It propelled them to an 8-point lead almost immediately, one that they would never relinquish.
From there on, scoring was fairly balanced for the Eagles across the roster. Once the threes died down a bit, Chad Venning, Jayden Hastings, and others got to work in the paint, bullying some of the undersized Old Dominion defenders. Then on the other end, BC shut down the ODU offense for minutes at a time, forcing long scoreless stretches in the first half, and then a very long low-scoring stretch as the second half came and went. Thanks to some poor shot selection behind the arc and aggressive defense in the paint, Old Dominion only managed to score 3 points in 6 straight minutes of gameplay, which is when BC really put the game away. Despite some tough foul calls against Elijah Strong and others, the BC defenders stood tall and earned their win.
Up next for the Eagles is a match-up with Missouri State on Monday night. Check out our full preview of the Cayman Islands Classic to learn more about the tournament!
