Name: Donald Hand, Jr.
Position: Guard
Year: Redshirt Sophomore
Number: 13
Height/Weight: 6’5, 210
Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA
Last Season: Hand returned from an ACL injury suffered in the second game of his freshman season to average 5.0 points and 1.9 boards in nearly 15 minutes per contest. As a spark off the bench, Hand flashed the athleticism and shotmaking ability that made him a consensus 4-star prospect in 2022. As to be expected, he had his fair share of struggles as he not only rounded into physical shape but also adapted to the speed and physicality of the college game.
Season Outlook: I expect Hand to start at the 3. The strength of this team is clearly its backcourt depth; at ACC Media Day Coach Grant even suggested the possibility of four-guard sets. At 6’5, 210, Hand is the biggest of the bunch and his ability to stretch the floor (34.2% from three on just over two attempts per game) tells me he’s a natural fit to slot in at the small forward position. Now, there needs to be growth; 34.2% is passable but I want to see that percentage jump with improved shot selection and more patience this year. Hand also discussed his growth on the defensive side of the floor. He has all the physical tools, now he needs to put it all together.
