On Wednesday afternoon, it was reported that Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos is planning to enter the transfer portal.

This news comes just about 24 hours after BC head coach Bill O’Brien announced that Grayson James would start for the team on Saturday instead of Castellanos. As a result, Castellanos “stepped away” from the team and will not be traveling with his teammates to Dallas for their match-up with SMU on Saturday.
It makes sense that a player losing their starting job would lead to their decision to enter the transfer portal. With the new rules around the NCAA that make it easier to transfer, Castellanos will be able to find an opportunity elsewhere, perhaps in an offensive scheme that better matches his skillset.
But quitting on the team in the middle of the season does seem like a puzzling choice. New starting QB Grayson James will likely be going through some growing pains as he integrates himself into the offense in the middle of the season. Castellanos could have stayed with the team to compete to win his job back. Or at least he could’ve shown the same amount of commitment to his team that many of his teammates have shown since the beginning of the season. Throughout this season that has featured many ups-and-downs, and a lot of roster decisions that have essentially “benched” players or reduced their playing time, Castellanos is the first one that I’m aware of to immediately leave the team and enter the transfer portal.
