Boston College women’s basketball defeated Miami 70-64 tonight, earning the Eagles their first ACC win of the season. This was truly a battle of the defenses, as Miami forced 25 turnovers and BC forced 20.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 7-0 lead tonight and kept Miami from scoring for almost 4 minutes, but the Hurricanes’ strong defense started shutting BC down as the period went on. With under a minute to go in the quarter, the Hurricanes took a 12-10 lead. The Eagles got the ball with seconds remaining, and at the buzzer Kaylah Ivey sunk a tricky 3 to put BC up 14-12 heading into the second quarter.
The Hurricanes couldn’t be stopped early in the second quarter, but by the media timeout BC had cut the lead down to 3 points. With under a minute to go in the half, Teya Sidberry hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 35. The teams went into the locker room tied up, with BC leading 22-15 in rebounds.
Miami scored first in the second half, but Andrea Daley quickly hit two 3 pointers in a row, putting BC up 43-37. Miami caught back up, and the teams began trading a 1 point lead back and forth for much of the third. With 1:16 to go, Daley put BC up by 2 with a basket and a free throw. The Eagles stopped Miami from scoring and won back possession on a jump ball, which led to Nene Ndiaye being fouled and hitting both free throws to give BC a 50-46 lead. With 21.4 to go Miami went to the line, but hit just one free throw, and the quarter ended with BC up 50-47.
T’Yana Todd started off the fourth quarter by sinking a 3, and then scored a second 3 to give BC a 56-49 lead. BC’s next basket was also a 3, this time from Sidberry. From there, the teams began trading baskets back and forth again.
At the media timeout BC led 63-58, but Miami went to the free thrown line when play resumed and made one shot to cut the leas to 63-59. The Hurricanes then forced a shot clock violation on BC, only to be forced to take a timeout thanks to a BC double team. The Hurricanes scored off the timeout, cutting BC’s lead down to 1. Sidberry scored with 2:29 to go to make it 65-62 BC, and then a BC steal and jump ball win led to another Sidberry basket to put BC up 67-62.
Miami scored next and then forced a travel to regain possession. The Hurricanes won a jump ball to retain possession, but then double dribbled to give it back to BC. BC turned it over, then blocked a Miami shot, but then knocked it out of bounds. Kaylah Ivey managed to steal the ball back and call a timeout to get possession back for the Eags with 54.2 remaining.
Miami forced a shot clock violation and got possession back with 23.7 to go, but Sidberry grabbed the rebound on the Hurricane’s missed shot to get it back for BC. The Canes started fouling at this point, and with 6.2 seconds to go they went into the bonus and sent Todd to the line to score a pair of free throws. Sidberry went 1-for-2 from the line as the clock wound down, and BC won this one 70-64.
