Boston College women’s basketball picked defeated Providence by a score of 71-56 today, earning the Eagles their first road win of the season.
BC kept the Friars off the board for almost 4 minutes to start the game, with Providence’s first points coming off of a pair of free throws with 6:10 remaining in the period. The Friars didn’t score a field goal until late in the first, making their first layup with 3:28 to go. The Eagles, on the other hand, went 8-for-14 during the first 10 minutes of play.
Providence had a stronger second period, but the Friars still weren’t able to catch up to BC, and BC’s defense made sure that the Eags would keep the lead for a decisive 71-56 victory.
Today’s game definitely showed some of the same concerning offensive trends for the Eagles despite the win, most notably that BC shot just 58.3% from the free throw line. The Eagles did hit 6 3-pointers however, which is a step in the right direction. Transfer Teya Sidberry, who has been a great addition to the roster so far, led BC’s offense with 22 points and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.
Of course, where this team tends to shine is on defense and the Eags had a strong defensive showing in the victory. Apart from limiting Providence’s chances so successfully early in the game, BC forced 27 turnovers, made 7 blocks, and grabbed an impressive 22 steals. Andrea Daley was BC’s defensive leader today with 2 blocks and 4 steals.
