These Eagles step up when it matters most
On Sunday afternoon, the Boston College women’s lacrosse team set out to defend their 2023 ACC title, facing off against the Syracuse Orange for the 2024 ACC Championship. Despite an early deficit, the Eagles rallied against the Orange and earned their second conference title in a row by a score of 15-8.
It wasn’t a good start for BC in this game, as Syracuse scored five of the first six goals and just wouldn’t let BC control possession. Shea Dolce stood as strong as she could manage in net, but the Orange offense got going early and the Eagles defense was getting penalized and they were allowing a lot of inside passing that led to scores. But Boston College got a couple of goals back before the end of the first quarter and didn’t let things get too out of control.
From there, BC went on a tear. They scored four goals in a row to tie things right back up and looked really good on offense once they had a chance to possess the ball. Cuse scored twice to take a small lead again, but the Eagles got right back to work with five straight scores this time (three of which came from Kayla Martello) and BC took a solid 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Syracuse scored right out of the gate in the final quarter, but it didn’t phase BC and Kayla Martello kept hunting the Syracuse defense. She scored another two goals to expand the Eagles’ lead. Cassidy Weeks followed up with a goal of her own and then Martello’s offensive presence set up a really nice pass to Emma LoPinto that essentially put the game out of reach. Boston College once again came up clutch down the stretch and took home another ACC championship as a result.
