Boston College appears to be inching closer to finding a new head football coach, with a former NFL leader reportedly emerging as the “top target.”
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported Thursday night that O’Brien is the focus of BC’s search, after previously reporting on Wednesday that O’Brien was one of two finalists.
A Boston native, the 54-year-old O’Brien was hired last month as the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State.

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day had announced that O’Brien would be calling plays for the Buckeyes in 2024.
“It isn’t just one of those situations where you take out one guy and put another guy in there and move on,” Day said this week about possibly replacing O’Brien. “I doesn’t work that way. But yes, we talked to different people for that position and we have contingency plans in place. Hopefully, we don’t have to go down that road, though.”
O’Brien was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach of the New England Patriots in 2023 after two seasons in the same role at Alabama.
He also has head coaching experience at Penn State (2012-13) and with the NFL’s Houston Texans (2014-20).
