The Eagles ring in the New Year against the Hurricanes
Start the New Year with some Boston College basketball on Wednesday as the Eagles take on the Miami Hurricanes! Miami is off to a slow and dramatic start to the season; they are 4-8 and their head coach, Jim Larrañaga, just stepped down from his position.

Boston College is back in action against Miami, a few days after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson in Conte Forum, 78-71. The Hurricanes are reeling a bit at the moment, after winning just one game in the month of December. Their last loss came on December 21st in a home, overtime game against Mount St. Mary’s. A few days later, highly-respected head coach Jim Larrañaga resigned, thrusting Bill Courtney into the interim coaching role.
The Hurricanes are led by fifth-year guard and member of the 2023 Final Four Miami team, Nijel Pack, who has been dealing with an injury the last few weeks. In nine games, he is shooting 45.4% from the field and 38.6% from beyond the arc and averaging 13.9 points per game. He’s also grabbing three rebounds per game and leading the team in assists by a large margin with 4.3. His best game of the season game in Miami’s season opener against Fairleigh Dickinson when he shot 9-11, made two three-pointers, had five assists and two boards, and scored 21 points.
The Hurricanes have three other players averaging double-digit points: Lynn Kidd, Matthew Cleveland, and Jalen Blackmon, all of whom are also seniors. Kidd is center who is now on his third team, and is putting up 11.4 points and 7.3 boards per game with a 68.2% field goal percentage. Cleveland is a 6’7 guard transfer from Florida State who is leading the team in three-point percentage (40.7%) and is third on the team in scoring (11.3 points). Blackmon is also a guard who is on his third team. He is putting up 10.2 points per game and shooting 39% from downtown.
Despite’s Miami’s record, the Hurricanes rank 107th at KenPom with the 36th best offensive efficiency rating. This should be a good test for the Eagles to begin 2025.
