What to Watch For
- Is it the year of Tommy Touchdowns? While Bill O’Brien is the new face in town, Thomas Castellanos is going to be the face of this new-look Boston College team. Now with a full offseason to prepare as QB1 (instead of splitting snaps with Emmett Morehead), and an offensive guru as head coach, will TC show us a big step forward? His passing game is especially important if BC wants to open up the middle of the field for their deadly running attack.
- Will DJU get going? The Florida State offense is only returning four starters from last season, and their new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei did not look great in his first game as a Seminole. He passed for 193 yards, rushed for 7, and threw no TDs. BC’s defense has a lot of question marks though, especially in the secondary, so it remains to be seen if the Eagles can hold him to a similar performance this week.
- Can the BC defensive line turn it around? FSU’s greatest strength on offense so far has been their run game. And while BC’s defensive line has a lot of talented players like Donovan Ezeiruaku, they performed way below expectations last season. They will need to step up their game by a lot in 2024 if the Eagles want to apply any sort of pressure on opponents’ offenses.
Tailgate Treat of the Week
In honor of the late Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew, my pick for the week is… Skittles.
Prediction: Boston College 28 Florida State 27
Screw it! Despite everything I said in the offseason about this being a difficult game to win, FSU proved last week that they are incredibly beatable. With a long flight coming back from Ireland earlier in the week, and a shell-shocking loss to Georgia Tech, I think FSU is vulnerable and the Eagles are well-rested and well-prepared enough to take advantage. Roll Eags, baby! Football is back!
