After being swept by Louisville two weekends ago, Boston College baseball has had a fews ups and downs.
They easily handled Dartmouth (5-16) on road last Wednesday, winning 12-2 in seven inning. Brady Miller earned his second win of the season after starting the game and throwing three scoreless frames. The Eagles tallied eleven hits as a team and five players had two RBIs: Jack Toomey, Kyle Wolff, Adam Magpoc, Vince Cimini, and Sam McNulty.
Notre Dame (16-17, 4-14) came to town for a weekend series and the three games were decided by a combined four runs. In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the Fighting Irish held BC scoreless, and won 2-0. The BC offense left seven runners on base and was stymied by Notre Dame pitching.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Eagles battled back from a 5-0 deficit to earn a 6-5 win. The Irish pushed five runs across in the opening frame before BC pitching regained its composure and allowed just one run the rest of the game. With BC trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, they put together one walk, two singles, and one double to score three runs and tie the game. The following inning, Magpoc singled, stole second, and scored on a double by freshman Colin Larson to give BC the lead. Joey Ryan pitched the final two innings and claimed his second win of the year.
Sunday’s rubber match saw BC come back from a 3-1 deficit and win in walk-off fashion. Notre Dame took a 3-1 lead after three innings, but Birdball tied it by scoring in the fifth and sixth. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the ninth. In the inning, McNulty singled and advanced to third on a groundout by Cimini. Gunnar Johnson entered as a pinch hitter and singled to center, giving the Eagles a 4-3 walk-off win.
After the series win over Notre Dame, BC hosted UConn in a game that got out of hand quickly. Both teams were tied at 3-3 after two innings, but the Huskies proceeded to score 14 more runs over the next two innings and eventually ended the game via the run rule. BC lost 21-9 and gave up 17 hits in an ugly performance.
Boston College baseball is now 17-19 overall with a 7-11 ACC record that places them 12th in the conference. They will travel to Winston-Salem to face Wake Forest (25-13, 9-9) this weekend.
