Last weekend, Boston College baseball (22-27, 8-19) was swept by Louisville, marking their sixth loss in a row. This weekend, Birdball put an end to their losing streak, but not before it reached eight games. The Maryland Terrapins (34-19) came to town and swept Saturday’s doubleheader before BC won the series finale on Sunday.
John West took the hill for the Eagles and struggled mightily in the opening frame of the series: Maryland scored six runs on three hits, two hit-by-pitches, two walks, and one error. West made it through 2.1 innings and gave up a total of seven runs, only two of which were earned and the Terrapins held a 7-0 lead after just three innings. BC scored its lone run of the game on a single by Vince Cimini in a game that Maryland won 8-1 in seven innings.
Game two of the doubleheader was much more competitive, but Birdball lost by a final score of 5-3. The Eagles actually outhit the Terrapins eight to six, but BC couldn’t score when they had the chance and left 12 runners on base.
A.J. Colarusso pitched a strong game, going five innings and striking out six batters. He allowed two earned runs, but another error by the defense also allowed two unearned runs to score. Maryland led 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning before BC could strike back. Cameron Leary drove in a run with a groundout and Kyle Wolff hit an RBI single to left field, making the score 4-2. Maryland tacked on another run in the seventh and despite loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles only scored one run and lost 5-3.
After eight straight losses, BC finally got back in the win column on Sunday. Eagles pitchers were masterful, combining to limit the Terrapins to one run and seven hits as BC earned a close 2-1 victory in walk-off fashion. Michael Farinelli started and pitched five scoreless innings, Tyler Mudd threw three innings of one-run ball, and Eric Schroeder earned his fifth win of the season with one scoreless inning of work in the ninth.
Nick Wang got the scoring started with a double to left that scored Leary in the first inning, and the score would remain 1-0 until the eighth inning. Maryland scored on a solo home run in the eighth and the game stayed tied until Wang came to the dish in the bottom of the ninth. He won the game for the Eagles with a walk-off, no-doubt homer to left field.
Boston College is now 22-27 with four regular season games remaining. The team will play its final home game of the season on May 14 against Georgetown before traveling to South Carolina for a series against Clemson.
