As has been widely rumored over the past couple days, Will Smith has signed a 3 year entry level contract with the San Jose Sharks and will be leaving Boston College after 1 season with the Eagles. Smith was drafted 4th overall in last year’s NHL Entry Draft.

Smith was one of the top players in college hockey this past season, helping to take BC to the NCAA Championship Game and playing a major role in the Eagles’ Hockey East Tournament victory. He scored a league leading 71 points in 41 games for the Eagles, including 25 goals. His offense was part of the elite line of freshmen, where he was joined by Ryan Leonard and Gabe Perrault.
Smith’s departure is certainly a loss for the Eagles, but BC does still have a significant amount of returning talent, including Perrault and Leonard (who announced he would be returning earlier this spring, although he could still change his mind), returning captain Eamon Powell, and elite goaltender Jacob Fowler. The Eagles will also welcome James Hagens this fall, who is projected to be the number 1 pick in this summer’s NHL Entry Draft.
