To the surprise of many, Bill Belichick did not get one of the eight vacant head coaching jobs in the NFL this offseason. But it’s very likely that we haven’t seen the last of him on the sidelines.
According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Belichick is “prepared to take a year off and will gear up for the 2025 cycle” after missing out on head coaching offers this year.
As for his potential destination, Fowler suggested that Belichick might “prioritize historic franchises” in the next cycle and eye the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles or Chicago Bears if any of their jobs become open. He highlighted Belichick’s relationship with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in particular.
“Belichick is a history buff who could prioritize historic franchises next cycle. Why is that important? Think about the jobs that could potentially open, which include the Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears. All of those are NFL flagships with rich history. If Mike McCarthy’s contract expires without more playoff wins, Belichick’s strong relationship with Jerry Jones could loom large,” Fowler wrote.
Of course, there’s no guaranteeing that any of those particular jobs will be open for Belichick to even interview for next year.
Then there’s also the matter of whether NFL owners think that Belichick’s time has passed. It’s hard to deny that the separation from Tom Brady after the 2019 season sent Belichick’s career on a vastly different trajectory.
