New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez has high hopes for quarterback Drake Maye as he enters his second season. Gonzalez even went as far as calling him a “superstar.”
That isn’t too big of a stretch for a quarterback who made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season.
“It all starts with Drake. Everybody seen what Drake can do. We got full faith in Drake,” admitted Gonzalez, when appearing on Pro Football Talk. “He’s a superstar. Being able, as a defense, to get more turnovers, to get back to the Patriot defense everybody knows, just getting the ball back. Because if we do that, and we get the ball back to Drake a lot more times, I feel like we could have won a lot more of those games.”
Gonzalez is a solid player in his own right, having been named an All-Pro this season. Maye vouched for Gonzalez to make the Pro Bowl back in December, and the two established a close relationship throughout the year.
Both Maye and Gonzalez figure to be cornerstone pieces for the Patriots organization.
There’s hope that Maye can develop and improve into one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has already established himself as one of the elite defenders in the league. Having both players on the roster is a good start for a rebuilding Patriots team.
