New England Patriots All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez believes Jerod Mayo was done dirty, but at the same time, he understands the business side of football.
When appearing on the “Frat Rules” podcast, Gonzalez shared his thoughts on the Patriots firing Mayo after only one season with the team.
“I did [like Jerod Mayo as a coach],” said Gonzalez. “I think they did him a little dirty giving him only one year. But, it’s business. We gon’ see what [Mike Vrabel] do. …They damn near cleaned house.”
The Patriots went 4-13 under Mayo last season, which ultimately led to him being fired by the team. They ended the season on a high note with a win over the Buffalo Bills, but they also dropped six of their last seven games.
Owner Robert Kraft took the blame for the failed hiring and admitted to putting Mayo in an “untenable situation.”
After firing Mayo, the Patriots moved quickly on hiring former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel. It has been a day and night change in New England with nearly an entire new coaching staff.
Regardless of his feelings on the Mayo situation, Gonzalez seems open to the new changes and hopeful that the Patriots can finally get on the right track.
