Jerry Montgomery joined New England’s coaching staff in 2024.
After one season with the New England Patriots, Jerry Montgomery is on to the AFC North.
The veteran defensive line coach will be joining the Cincinnati Bengals in the same capacity under new defensive coordinator Al Golden, according to a report Wednesday from The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr.
Montgomery, 45, had been hired in Foxborough last February. The 4-13 season that followed saw the defensive side of the ball allow 131.4 rushing yards per game while generating an NFL-low 28 sacks. Recent Detroit Lions defensive line coach and run game coordinator Terrell Williams, who worked alongside head coach Mike Vrabel with the Tennessee Titans, has since arrived as defensive coordinator.
Nine seasons were accrued with the Green Bay Packers before Montgomery headed to Gillette Stadium. Overlapping with executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf, he served as a defensive front assistant from 2015 through 2017 before staying on as the defensive line coach in 2018. The title of running game coordinator was added for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
A former Iowa Hawkeyes defensive tackle, Montgomery signed with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2002. He went on to tour the Arena Football League with the Chicago Rush, Colorado Crush and Las Vegas Gladiators through 2005 while also starting his coaching career.
Prior to entering the NFL ranks, Montgomery had stints at his alma mater as well as Iowa City West High School, North Iowa Community College, Northern Iowa, Wyoming and Indiana. He then held the role of defensive line coach at Michigan from 2011 to 2012 and at Oklahoma from 2013 to 2014.
The Bengals previously announced the additions of offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant offensive line coach Michael McCarthy, who also spent 2024 with the Patriots.
