New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is within striking distance of Don Shula’s all-time NFL wins record. But this year he’s achieved a milestone he likely wanted no part of.
Ahead of Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, Belichick has set a personal record for the most losses as a head coach in a season. At 4-12 he is guaranteed to finish with either 12 or 13 losses – the most of his career.
Prior to this season his worst record in a season had been 5-11. He had reached that mark in 1995 with the Cleveland Browns and in 2000 with the Patriots.
Belichick has also guaranteed that 2023 will have the lowest winning percentage of any season where he was at the helm. A win over the Jets would at best leave him with a 29.4-percent win rate.

At 302 career wins, Belichick is 26 wins away from matching the late-great Don Shula’s all-time wins record. But that could take several more years of coaching for him to achieve at this point.
