Bill Belichick isn’t quite ready to anoint Drake Maye the next Josh Allen just yet.
Helping out with some of ESPN’s draft coverage on the set of the “Pat McAfee Show,” Belichick shared his thoughts on his ex-team’s 2024 picks. Saying of New England’s third overall selection:
“I think that’s certainly a top need for them. It’s quarterback, tackle, and wide receiver. So, this is one of the top needs. Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen. He’s been doing that for quite a while. We’ll see about that.”
“I think there are some similarities in terms of size and athleticism,” Belichick pointed out. “But Josh Allen’s a pretty special player now.”
The six-time Super Bowl champ knows just how tall of a task it is to defend Josh Allen and the Bills offense after facing them twice a year for the past half decade-plus.
While Maye has compared himself to Allen in the past, one player he attempted to make clear that he’s not is Tom Brady.
“Tom Brady’s the GOAT,” Maye said during his post-draft press conference.
“It’s easy to say that. He’s the best that ever played this game. I’m not going to be Tom Brady. So, I’m just going to try to be Drake Maye, and from there, I’m just trying to learn from him, hopefully get to know him a little bit. Other than that, just try to soak it up, be a sponge and try to learn all I can from him. He’s the man of that town.”
