After a very brief trip to Columbus, Bill O’Brien is returning to New England… just not with the Patriots.
As O’Brien gets set to take over as head coach at Boston College, the former Pats OC received some words of support from Bill Belichick. Who said in a statement released by the Eagles Wednesday:
My relationship with Bill spans nearly three decades. Of all the coaches I have worked with, few possess Bill’s experience and success at both the college and NFL levels. As he has proven each step of his career, Bill is a leader of young men and an outstanding communicator. He is tough, smart, passionate and a great choice to lead the Boston College football program while also serving as an outstanding representative of the BC community.
Belichick’s remarks are his first public comment since parting ways with the Patriots on Jan. 11. The six-time Super Bowl champ likely won’t return to the sideline for at least another year after not accepting a position this past coaching cycle despite interviewing.
As for O’Brien, he’ll attempt to revive a Boston College football program that hasn’t had a 10-win season since Matt Ryan was quarterbacking the team back in 2007.
The last time O’Brien coached in college he led Penn State to a 15-9 record in the immediate aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky situation.
