The Belichicks are reuniting in Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina Tar Heels have a new defensive coordinator, and it is one with close ties to their new head coach: Steve Belichick, son of recently-hired head coach Bill Belichick, will take over the position as first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.
The Belichicks arriving in Chapel Hill as a package deal was widely rumored to happen. While Bill did sign a five-year contract with the school, the belief is that Steve might be groomed to take over at some point in the near future.
For now, the pair will try to recreate some of the success they have enjoyed during their time with the New England Patriots. The elder Belichick served the team’s head coach for 24 seasons, winning six Super Bowls along the way and establishing the first dynasty of the NFL’s salary cap era. His son, meanwhile, was part of three championship teams.
Both father and son departed New England in January. Whereas Bill did not immediately return to coaching and instead spent a year in various media roles, Steve took over as defensive coordinator at the University of Washington.
Brian Belichick, the youngest of Bill Belichick’s sons, remained with the Patriots, meanwhile. He is the team’s current safeties coach.
