Robert Spillane, New England Patriots, Agree to Contract
While the Las Vegas Raiders had a season to forget in 2024, Robert Spillane brought his ‘A’ game as one of the more consistent players on defense. Starting in all 17 games, the linebacker finished the season with two interceptions, seven passes defended, two sacks, 158 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits. Unfortunately, his strong play wasn’t enough to get this team to the playoffs or save head coach Antonio Pierce’s job.
Robert Spillane originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 NFL Draft. Signing with the Tennessee Titans, the Western Michigan product couldn’t make the Week 1 roster and spent most of the season on the practice squad. While he made his way into two games, he never recorded an official statistic with the team.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and the Pittsburgh Steelers found a diamond in the rough when they signed Spillane to a new contact in 2019. While he primarily played special teams in 2019, he became a featured part of the defense in 2020 and beyond. While he never became a full-time player in Pittsburgh’s loaded defense, he became a key rotational piece of a team that never posted a losing season.
Robert Spillane signed a new contract with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 and finally had the chance to start. The veteran made the most of this opportunity, starting all 17 games while recording three interceptions, four passes defended, one forced fumble, 3.5 sacks, 148 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and four quarterback hits. Thanks in part to his efforts, the Raiders showed life under interim head coach Antonio Pierce after he replaced Josh McDaniels.
