Schooler inked a three-year extension last week.
The New England Patriots recently agreed to a new contract extension with special teams ace Brenden Schooler.
Shortly after the deal became public, special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer’s phone blew up.
“The fact that 30 coaches around the league texted me to tell me, ‘Hey, that’s really good you locked him up because I’ll tell you right now if we didn’t’ do that, he was going to go somewhere and get locked up for a pretty good amount of money,’” Springer shared Friday. “That lets you know how many coaches respect him around the league and what he means to this team that they would did that right now in the season.”
The three-year extension agreed to last week will keep Schooler in New England through 2027 with a base value of $9 million. Schooler can then earn up to $10.5 million with incentives.
“He’s a phenomenal leader for us. A phenomenal guy,” Springer said. “He deserves every penny of it and I want him to continue to grow and play in this league for a long time.
After being named to the NFLPA All Pro team by his peers last season, Schooler’s level of play has only risen this season. Even without Matthew Slater on his unit, Schooler’s six special teams tackles are tied for third most in the league.
He additionally blocked a punt against the Dolphins and has yet to be called for a penalty after being flagged four times last season.
“We have, in my opinion, the best special teams player right now in Schools. I think he’s done a phenomenal job,” punter Bryce Baringer said earlier this week. “What he brings to the table is a leader. He puts it on tape every day in practice and in games.
“I say he gives 110 percent because he goes that extra mile whether it’s in workouts, in practice, trying to help out the younger guys and just be that role model for our core group. I think that’s been huge this year for us.”
