Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, was invited to Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night to watch Tom Brady get inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame. He showed up to the ceremony with John Feitelberg, Hank Lockwood, and Paul “Gaz” Gulczynski.
Believe it or not, Portnoy actually left Wednesday’s event early because he wanted to catch the end of Game 3 between the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots.
Unfortunately for Portnoy, he actually missed Brady give his crew a shoutout during his speech. As you’d expect, he was a bit disappointed about that.
In that moment though, Portnoy felt like he had to give the Celtics all his attention and support.
“Not mad at all that I snuck out to watch the NBA Finals and missed this moment. Celts needed me. #banner18. *but doesn’t mean I’m not sad about it,” Portnoy tweeted on Wednesday night.
Portnoy addressed his decision once more on Thursday morning with an “Emergency Press Conference.” He basically shared his point of view as to why he needed to leave the ceremony.
“I was like, ‘I need to watch this [expletive] game.’ This is banner 18. Like, yeah, Tom Brady, I love you, but what’s Tom Brady always say? What’s his favorite banner? His favorite banner is the next one. And that’s how I am,” Portnoy explained. “I move forward. I don’t move backwards. This is the NBA [expletive] Finals.”
Luckily for Portnoy, the Celtics prevailed to take a commanding 3-0 series lead in the NBA Finals. If they lost that game, he probably would’ve been kicking himself for leaving Brady’s ceremony early.
