The New England Patriots ended a formidable era when moving on from Bill Belichick this offseason. Robert Kraft parted ways with the legendary head coach four years after Tom Brady’s exit
Apple TV+ unveiled The Dynasty documentary series on Friday. Before the premiere, director Matthew Hamacheck discussed Kraft’s thought process through difficult decisions on Up & Adams.
“I think ultimately you realize that this is a guy who wanted to hang onto everybody and didn’t want to have to make that choice,” Hamacheck told Kay Adams on Wednesday. “I think it really was his goal and his hope that he would be able to keep them together. I think the other thing you really realize as you watch this thing unfold is how much he did try to keep that going along the way.”
Hamacheck teased a deeper look into Kraft’s perspective over the end of the 10-episode series.
Kraft oversaw a prolonged period of excellence when the Patriots made 17 playoff appearances over a 19-year window. That run included six Super Bowl championships and 17 straight seasons with double-digit victories.
While Kraft would have loved to see Brady retire as a Patriot, the iconic quarterback closed out his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The tension between Brady and Belichick that drove their split promises to play a pivotal role in The Dynasty.
“Tom and I had a number of discussions about how Bill treated him,” Kraft said in the documentary, per The Athletic’s Chad Graff. “Tommy is very sensitive. He was always looking for Bill’s approval, almost in a father-son kind of way. And that’s not Bill’s style ever to give that.”
