New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye suffered a head injury versus the Los Angeles Chargers and is currently questionable to return. In his absence, veteran Jacoby Brissett will take over the offense.
Update (1:40 EST): Head coach Jerod Mayo announced that Drake Maye has been cleared and will return to the field
Drake Maye Suffers Head Injury Against Chargers, Questionable to Return
Maye entered Week 17’s contest against the Los Angeles Chargers under center but didn’t stay there for long. Maye scrambled on the first third down of the game but took a hard hit short of the sticks. The quarterback took a while to get up before eventually walking off the field in notable pain. He quickly went to the medical tent and broadcast cameras showed him heading towards the locker room. Shortly thereafter, the team listed him as questionable to return with a head injury.
With Maye down, the Patriots will entrust the offense to veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett. Originally selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Brissett began his career with the Patriots before playing with the Colts, Dolphins, Browns, and Commanders before re-signing with the team in 2024. The quarterback started the first five games of the season before eventually losing the job to Maye.
This is not the first head injury for Drake Maye. The quarterback missed a sizable portion of Week 8’s action after suffering a concussion against the New York Jets. In his absence, Brissett powered the Patriots to an unlikely victory against their divisional foes.
Jacoby Brissett is the only other active quarterback on the roster, but the team could turn to sixth-round pick Joe Milton if injury strikes again. The Tennessee product has yet to play an NFL snap, but his college and preseason film shows a player with a gifted arm and elite physical traits but no accuracy. No matter who is under center, New England will struggle to beat the Los Angeles Chargers.
