Update 10/27/2024: Drake Maye ruled out of Patriots-Jets after suffering concussion
After head coach Jerod Mayo already made the announcement that Drake Maye would not return to the New England Patriots’ game against the New York Jets, the team officially ruled the young quarterback out as well. In the process of doing so, some additional information was added to Maye’s status: he did indeed suffer a concussion.
As a result, Maye is now in concussion protocol. His status for the Patriots’ game against the Tennessee Titans in Week 9 is therefore also up in the air now.
Original story 10/27/2024: Drake Maye ruled out of Patriots-Jets after suffering head injury
The New England Patriots are trailing the New York Jets at the half of their Week 8 contest, but the biggest news coming out of the Gillette Stadium is not the team’s 13-7 deficit.
In the second quarter Patriots starting quarterback Drake Maye left the game with a head injury. According to head coach Jerod Mayo, the rookie will not return to the contest.
“He’ll be out for the remainder of this game,” Mayo told CBS Sports sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala after the end of the second quarter, “It’s that next man up mentality no matter what position you play.”
Maye was initially banged up on a scramble play with 1:09 left in the first quarter, but he remained in the game. However, he eventually exited the contest early in the second period.
The third overall selection in this year’s draft was evaluated in the blue medical tent on the sideline, and later left for the locker room. At the time of his departure, he had completed three of six pass attempts for 23 yards and also added 46 yards and a touchdown on three carries.
New England replaced Maye with veteran Jacoby Brissett, who went 1-for-1 for 3 yards down the stretch in the first half.
“We need Jacoby to take us to the promised land,” Mayo said.
