According to The Dynasty, the new Apple TV+ series on the New England Patriots’ dynasty, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick’s relationship was in a bad place by the end of the quarterback’s time with the organization.
During a clip in the show, Brady addresses the fallout between himself and his head coach.
“Me and coach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together,” Brady said. “But I wasn’t going to sign another contract (in New England) even if I wanted to play until (I was) 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn’t going to sign up for more of it.”
During Zolak & Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub Wednesday, former Patriots quarterback Scott Zolak was asked if he really believed Brady was as unhappy as it seems.
“I go back to when I sat down with them when they were 8-0 and we were down in Baltimore. And he was about as miserable and pissed off as a guy could be. Felt like a 1-7 team,” Zolak said, referring to Brady’s final season with the team in 2019. “They were 8-0 before he lost that Sunday night game to Baltimore. Now, I think we ended up what, 12-4 his last year. And lost in the Wildcard round. If he could see the way it was being built. It’s sort of forecast the lack of talent that was being picked, like the N’Keal Harry disaster. Then I would say, yeah, I believe him.
“But he also stood there at camp. Said “why don’t you go talk to Mr. Kraft” when he wanted the Drew Brees contract, and they supposedly wanted to go year to year. And is that part of the building process? I think you have to factor that in, right? Their approach with him. “We want to go year to year. I don’t like where this is heading.” And he knew who made the final call, so that’s where the blame goes. That’s a big one.”
The Patriots lost 37-20 in that Sunday night game Zolak is referring to. Then 8-1 at the bye week, they finished 12-4 and were soundly beaten by the Tennessee Titans in the first round of the playoffs.
The first two episodes of The Dynasty will premiere on Apple TV+ tomorrow, with two episodes debuting every Friday for the next five weeks.
