Shane Vereen is reportedly joining the Houston Texans coaching staff.
According to Click 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans hired the former running back as a player personnel assistant. Vereen was working as a college football analyst for FOX Sports and the Pac-12 Network.
Vereen spent the first four seasons of his seven-year playing career with the New England Patriots. The 2011 second-round pick tallied 1,930 scrimmage yards and 14 touchdowns in 42 regular-season games.
The 5-foot-10 Vereen was one of several Patriots running backs who excelled as a pass-catcher for Tom Brady. He collected 52 receptions during the 2014 season before coming up huge in the playoffs.
Vereen tallied 144 yards during the postseason and caught 11 of 12 targets in a Super Bowl XLIX triumph over the Seattle Seahawks.
Vereen parlayed that performance into a three-year, $12.35 million contract with the New York Giants that offseason. He registered a career-high 59 catches in 2015, but a triceps injury limited him to five games the following year.
Although he signed with the New Orleans Saints in the summer of 2018, Vereen was released before the season started after suffering a finger injury. He joined FOX Sports the following year.
Vereen joins a Texans organization with high hopes after making the playoffs in C.J. Stroud’s first season. They put an exclamation point on an eventful offseason by acquiring star wide receiver Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills last month.
