The No. 50 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft cleared waivers after departing from the active roster in Foxborough over the weekend.
Thornton, 24, had been a healthy scratch on four occasions from October into November. On a depth chart featuring Kendrick Bourne, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker and K.J. Osborn, his final fall with the organization that drafted him brought four catches for 47 yards.
The Baylor product, who clocked the fastest 40-yard dash among wideouts in his class at the NFL Scouting Combine, scored three touchdowns as a New England rookie. He has not returned to the end zone since then in a career spanning 39 catches for 385 yards across 28 games and 13 starts.
Thornton’s most recent start arrived in the season opener. He now joins quarterback Patrick Mahomes and a locker room that includes past Patriots in wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, tight end Anthony Firkser, guard Joe Thuney, nose tackle Mike Pennel and outside linebacker Joshua Uche.
