Jalen Mills, New York Giants, Agree To Contract
Safety Jalen Mills spent his campaign with the Patriots after appearing in all 17 games last season. He posted 45 tackles, a forced fumble and a pass defense. Mills had his fair share of playing both safety and corner in his NFL career. He notched 406 tackles, 1.5 sacks, seven interceptions two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery with the Eagles.
Mills will help fill the void for Xavier McKinney who signed elsewhere and will potentially become their starter. Jalen Mills originally entered the league as a seventh-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles, the LSU product had his best year with them in 2020 posting 59 solo tackles, 15 assists and four tackles for loss. The Giants now have help impending if they want Jalen Mills to fill the back line of the secondary this upcoming season.
Mills saw a dip in his playing time with the New England Patriots by 40% of defensive snaps. Despite that, Mills was able to notch four total pressures, one pass breakup and four quarterback hurries. A new scenery with the New York Giants could see him adjust for more playing time in his career since his days with the Eagles. The former Super Bowl champion had some ups and downs with injuries in his career, but when fully healthy, he’s ready to go.
Although it may not be the comparable swap to McKinney, Mills is showing up when healthy. He can play both positions as well including cornerback. He started his career in that position before transitioning to safety. Since signing his rookie contract, Jalen Mills started 83 games and has seven career interceptions.
