New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo believes rookie quarterback Drake Maye is “on track to be a special player” in the NFL.
The work developing Maye behind the scenes has continued, but there’s no denying the incredible potential and talent he already possesses at this stage of his career.
When asked about comparing Maye to Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, Mayo steered clear of the comparison, but he did offer up some high praise for his young quarterback.
“Drake is on track to be a special player in this league. Hopefully, we all get a chance to see it,” Mayo told reporters at Tuesday’s media conference.
Maye put together another solid game in a losing effort against the Buffalo Bills in Week 16. He recorded 261 passing yards, two touchdowns and an interception. That brought his season total to 2,159 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
But you have to look beyond the numbers to see the impact he’s having on the field. The Patriots are lacking in wide receiver talent, and the offensive line has struggled all season. However, Maye’s ability to move around and create plays with his legs makes everyone better.
The returns for the rookie have been impressive so far, and now, he’ll have a chance to show off his talent once more on Saturday against Herbert and the Chargers.
