New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo tried to get a former teammate to join his staff this offseason.
During an appearance on “Up & Adams,” former Patriots safety Devin McCourty revealed that Mayo reached out to him after he got the job in New England.
“I’m old and washed up. He tried to get me to coach,” McCourty said. “That’s the thing with all the older guys. He says, ‘I don’t know if they’ll walk in back to play, but we got a spot for them on the staff.’ But, nah those hours aren’t meant for my life right now. Not at all.”
McCourty and Mayo were teammates from 2010-2015.
When Mayo returned to the Patriots in 2019 as an inside linebackers coach, McCourty was still playing at a high level. That speaks volumes about the three-time Super Bowl champion’s durability and consistency.
Over the course of his NFL career, McCourty racked up 971 tackles, 110 pass break-ups, 35 interceptions and 11 forced fumbles. To this day, he’s considered a fan favorite in New England.
Maybe, just maybe, McCourty will consider becoming a coach at some point in the future.
For now, McCourty will enjoy his role as commentator for NBC’s “Football Night In America.”
