Several years ago, the New England Patriots had a few players on their team drinking whiskey before practices. At least that’s what one of the franchise’s best defensive players ever said on a popular radio show.
While on “The Dan Patrick Show” this Monday, former Patriots cornerback Ty Law was asked if he “ever had a sip of anything” before or during an NFL game. His response was as honest as it gets.
“No, we did it in practice,” Law said. “Mike Vrabel used to have the flask, so we’d all go to Vrabel and hit the flask; he had some whiskey or something. I was a coffee guy.”
Naturally, Patrick asked Law about Vrabel having a flask on him for practices.
“He had everybody else getting a flask,” Law continued. “Back then, we used to have to drive to practice… that was before the beautiful Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. We had to get in our car and drive over with shoulder pads. We were taking drinks in the car. It was going down on that little five-minute drive, especially when it was cold outside.”

Drinking whiskey before practice didn’t stop the Patriots from achieving their ultimate goal in the early 2000s.
When Law was on the Patriots from 1995-2004, the team won three Super Bowl titles. He also had success on an individual level, making the Pro Bowl four times during that stretch.
